Meet Sophie Duncan CPA CA, Senior Manager - Accounting and Tax at MOD!
Sophie is a founding member of the MOD squad - from our humble beginning collaborating on a single project (that resulted in an acquisition of a SaaS company for $110M!) to overseeing many of our clients’ accounting and tax needs, Sophie helped lay the foundation of our incredible team.
Let's get to know Sophie!
What are the things you're most proud of?
- My children and my family. They are super amazing people and kids are so fun to be around. They never sweat the small stuff and are always looking to have a good time.
- My circle of friends. I am so fortunate to be surrounded by a group of people that have similar values as me. These people are so supportive and always give me something to reflect on.
- My career. I’ve worked hard and I am proud of the work I produce. I take pride in what I do, and I like talking through problems with coworkers or clients.
Why is accounting and tax a cool job?
Cool has different meanings to different people. What makes it cool for me is seeing business owners achieve their goals and being lucky enough to be a part of that in a small way. I love seeing people turn a passion into a career or building up a business to support others. I’m always interested in what inspires people to go on these entrepreneurial adventures. Being a part of their success story is cool for me.
What advice can you share for people looking for an accountant?
Find an accountant that you click with and supports your goals! Someone that is genuinely interested in your business and interested in your own personal goals as well. Your business and your personal goals often work hand in hand, so if your accountant isn’t interested in both pieces, you could be missing out!
What do you love about working with MOD?
Working with clients that are focused on social impact is really inspiring. Social impact clients are out there supporting the community, helping the environment, and making daily positive changes. Since we consider ourselves part of our clients’ team, we get to be behind the scenes making sure they can focus on what they do best. We are constantly collaborating and brainstorming ideas on how we can make their lives easier, so they focus on what they do best. Is there new tech that would make your life easier? Is there a different way to make something better? Could we show you the information in a different way that helps you make decisions? We totally get that not everyone is as pumped about the accounting piece, so we work hard to make that easy on you!
Who are the women that inspire you?
My mom was an inspirational woman. She moved out west without knowing much English to build a life in western Canada, away from her family. She worked hard to learn English, then got re-educated in English and went on to have a great career after taking a break to raise us.

With over 15 years of experience in accounting and tax, Sophie helps owner-managed businesses achieve their goals. She provides her clients with the information and tools they need to make informed decisions. Sophie came to MOD Accounting & Tax because she loves working on a superstar team with a shared vision and commitment to make our clients' lives easier. She loves that the whole team collaborates to find the best solutions to provide the best client experience and cheers for our clients as they climb towards their goals and are constantly brainstorming ways to make the client experience the best experience.
Sophie is experienced in financial analysis, forecasting, financial planning, and other areas of business management. She helps clients and their businesses through all stages, whether they are starting out or are well established in their industry. She believes collaboration is the key to a successful relationship between the accountant and the business owner and enjoys working closely with clients to identify the opportunities and solutions that can help them achieve their milestones.
Sophie is a Chartered Professional Accountant living in Alberta. She graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce (BComm) from the University of Alberta. In her free time, Sophie enjoys cooking, experiencing new restaurants, and spending time with her family at the lake. Sophie lives with her family on Treaty 6.
